This 2023 Audi A4 45 TFSI Quattro S Line is exactly how we want an A4 optioned. It spent its life in California out of the San Rafael area and comes in our favorite Audi combination: black on black, made even better by the must-have Black Optic Package. Add the S Line Sport Package, more powerful 45 TFSI drivetrain, Quattro AWD, Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, adaptive LED headlights, Bang & Olufsen premium sound, adaptive cruise control, heated steering wheel, heated seats, and all the additional Premium Plus equipment, and this is one seriously well-optioned A4.

The S Line Sport Package is absolutely everything to us because it completely transforms the A4. You get the more aggressive S Line front bumper, upgraded grille and larger air openings, sportier side skirts, redesigned rear bumper and diffuser, upgraded S Line wheels, sport suspension and handling upgrades, sharper steering feel, sport seating, interior upgrades, and S Line badging throughout. Park this next to a basic A4 and there is no comparison—the S Line has a lower, wider, substantially more aggressive appearance and feels much more connected from behind the wheel.

Then you add the Black Optic Package, and on a black A4 it takes the S Line look to another level. Instead of bright exterior trim breaking up the car, you get the factory high-gloss black treatment throughout the grille and exterior trim, black window surrounds and additional dark exterior accents that visually tie everything together. On a lighter-colored Audi, Black Optic gives you contrast; on a black-on-black A4, it creates the sinister, completely blacked-out appearance that we absolutely love. Factory Black Optic is also the way to do it—you don't have to rely on vinyl wrap trying to imitate the appearance later.

The S Line wheel package is one of our favorite factory setups available on these A4s. Combined with the aggressive bodywork, Black Optic trim and black exterior, the wheels give the vehicle exactly the stance it needs. It's one of those combinations where every individual option complements the next instead of looking like the car was pieced together afterward.

The 45 TFSI is also important because Audi offered the A4 with two different performance levels. This is the more powerful version, producing approximately 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, versus approximately 201 horsepower in the 40 TFSI. That's roughly 60 additional horsepower, and you can absolutely feel it when merging, passing or getting into the throttle. Pair that extra power with Quattro all-wheel drive, and this is the A4 drivetrain we want.

Another must-have is the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus digital gauge cluster. Some A4s simply don't give you this same fully digital driving environment, and to us it makes a massive difference. Instead of an old-school gauge setup, you get a beautiful high-resolution customizable display capable of putting navigation, vehicle information, audio, driver information and different gauge layouts directly in front of you. Especially at night, Virtual Cockpit transforms the entire driver's seat experience and makes the interior feel like something out of a much newer and more expensive vehicle.

Although we aren't going to make a huge deal about the Premium Plus name because it isn't the top trim, we absolutely want the equipment that comes with it. This one brings together features including Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus, adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist, Audi Active Lane Assist, Audi Phone Box, upgraded exterior lighting, Bang & Olufsen premium sound, power-folding auto-dimming mirrors, driver memory, parking assistance, advanced keyless access, additional charging capability, and upgraded driver-assistance and convenience technology. It's the equipment we care about, not the name of the trim level.

The upgraded adaptive LED headlights are another huge plus. Audi has always been one of our favorite manufacturers when it comes to lighting design, and these give you excellent visibility after dark while also dramatically improving the appearance of the A4 during the day. The sharp LED signature combined with the S Line front end and Black Optic treatment is a huge part of why this car looks so good coming down the road.

The Bang & Olufsen premium sound system is another option we absolutely want. If you're an audiophile, you'll immediately appreciate the additional power, deep clean bass, crisp highs, clear vocals and the ability to turn it up without everything becoming muddy. But you don't have to be a music fanatic to notice the difference—even podcasts and audiobooks come through more crisp, clean and detailed, making voices easier to understand and long drives more enjoyable.

The adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist is another feature that becomes difficult to live without once you've owned it. Rather than simply holding a set speed, the system can automatically adjust your speed to help maintain distance from traffic ahead, dramatically reducing the constant accelerating and braking required during freeway driving. Combined with Audi Active Lane Assist, it makes long trips and heavy traffic substantially less tiring.

You also get the heated steering wheel and heated front seats, which are especially valuable here in Washington. Combine those with the upgraded S Line seating, black interior, premium materials, Virtual Cockpit, and Bang & Olufsen audio, and this is an extremely comfortable cabin whether you're commuting ten minutes or driving across the state.

Underneath everything is Audi's legendary Quattro all-wheel drive. The system gives you tremendous confidence in rain, snow, mountain passes and changing road conditions while retaining the sporty character that makes an A4 enjoyable. Combined with the additional power of the 45 TFSI and the S Line chassis upgrades, you get an excellent balance between everyday luxury, all-weather confidence and genuine sport-sedan performance.

And we absolutely love the black-on-black color combination, especially with Black Optic. Black emphasizes the sharper S Line bumpers, grille, lighting, wheels and body lines while allowing all of the factory black exterior trim to blend together into one cohesive design. In our opinion, black is one of the best colors Audi makes, and on an S Line Black Optic car like this, you immediately understand why.
